To enhance the quality of services provided to members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, the Department of Aging and Adult Services-Public Guardian (DAAS-PG) implemented the Safe Zone pilot program in April 2017. The Safe Zone program certifies Safe Zone Allies trained to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space in which members of the LGBT community may discuss issues related to programs and services available to them and other members of the public. The San Bernardino County DAAS-PG Safe Zone pilot program consisted of staff volunteers who participated in training conducted by an instructor certified in LGBT awareness education. The training was designed to provide information to social workers with the framework for providing safe, positive and inclusive interactions and interventions with older adults who self-identify as part of the LGBT community. Due to the success of the pilot program, in September 2019, the program was extended to all DAAS-PG staff, who attended the day-long training. Supplemental materials including lapel pins, flyers and postcards were created to promote the Safe Zone program to staff and the public.
