The Maricopa County Risk Recycling Website (internal site – see website screen shots at bottom of document) promotes a recycling program with a twist. Even though some waste materials are legal to send to a landfill (such as alkaline batteries), they can also be recycled (for a cost) and kept out of our landfills. Risk Recycling intercepts waste materials from County operations that may be hazardous to the environment or could result in contamination of ground or water and recycles them, free of charge to the departments. Risk Management’s goal is to “help Maricopa County to be a fiscally responsible leader in environmental stewardship.” Historically, some Maricopa County departments have recycled paper, aluminum and plastic water bottles. There are many, many other waste materials generated by the county that were not recycled and tossed into a trash bin. The new website currently promotes the recycling of 160 different products, from appliances, automotive waste, to furniture, office equipment and writing instruments (list at end of document). If a department has something that they are not sure what to do with, Risk Recycling will work to find a recycling solution. Recycling containers are provided to all departments for small recyclables. All recycling waste (large and small) can be picked up at the department’s location by simply requesting a pick-up through a fillable email form or departments can arrange to drop their recycling waste off at the Risk Recycling Processing Center. The Risk Recycling Team worked with the Office of Enterprise Technology (OET) to implement a solution to bring recycling and pick-up/drop-off information to all county departments. The site was unveiled on June 18, 2015.
