The COVID-19 pandemic, which started sometime in early 2020, swept across the United States, resulting in millions falling ill and hundreds of thousands losing their lives. Businesses were closed across the country, with many residents under mandatory “stay at home orders”. The Charlotte County Recreation Division was no exception and officially cancelled all scheduled programs and events and closed the doors to recreation centers and aquatic facilities March 17, 2020. As the days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, Charlotte County residents along with the rest of the country searched for ways to live, work and play in the “new normal.” As more was learned about how the virus spread, pressure began to mount for the county to reopen recreational facilities including swimming pools to provide a much-needed outlet for exercise, recreation and socialization.
