Ray’s Splash Planet is an indoor water park operated by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, located on the edge of downtown Charlotte, NC. “Ray” is the name of their department’s mascot, standing for “Recreate All Year.” The use of this facility for Halloween events is innovative, creative, and unexpected. It has filled a strong need in the community for safe Halloween activities, especially for children. Offered the Friday before Halloween, the carnival and haunted trail brought more than 1,300 people to Ray’s Splash Planet in 2009. The event lasted for two and half hours and was presented by more than 70 staff and volunteers who transformed the 29,000 square foot facility into two distinct areas of fun.
