The Miami-Dade Police Department’s (MDPD) Information Technology Services Bureau (ITSB) implemented the RapidID (RID) system in collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and photographs obtained from the Mug Shot System. This system enhances and expedites the positive identification process of a subject. Before this system was implemented, police officers would have to come into MDPD Headquarters to process subjects and obtain their criminal history. With the introduction of the RID, an officer is now able to fingerprint a subject in the field, via a portable fingerprint scanner, to determine their identity and criminal history. With these facts, various state and national systems are queried to compile the subject’s rap sheet. If the subject has been previously booked in Miami-Dade County (MDC), the most current mug shot is also attached to all the information that was gathered and a PDF file is generated. Several benefits, such as officer safety and reducing hours needed to process subjects for positive identification, were derived from automating this fingerprint process. This system has proven effective in verifying a subject’s identity when proper or no credentials were provided. Success has also been noted when processing a deceased person.
