Category: Information Technology (Best in Category)

Year: 2015

The Miami Dade County Public Works and Waste Management Department and Information Technology Department implemented an extensive Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) network for the monitoring of local rainfall and secondary canal levels. The network of sites is located throughout the County and provides County Departments, municipal stakeholders and other agencies such as the National Weather Service with real time data ranging from canal levels, daily total rainfall and rainfall intensities during storm events. This data helps identify failures in equipment and severely impacted areas more efficiently. Furthermore, the system allows for the deployment of resources to areas that are impacted by heavy rainfall quickly and decisively. Additionally, the system allows for data mining and reporting/trending for post storm analysis. The system is accessible from any device with internet access.
