Do the crime, pay the time? Time is defined by Merriam-Webster as a measured or measurable period. However, for those members of society that have been convicted of a crime, they are delivered a life sentence of collateral consequences. Collateral consequences are legal and regulatory sanctions that limit and even prohibit people from employment opportunities and occupational licensing that can lead to advanced employment opportunities. So, what then? The Maricopa County’s Human Services Department (HSD) created a Smart Justice (SJ) Employment Team within the Workforce Development Division to address the needs of this specific population. The SJ Employment Team uses novel approaches, mobility as well as leveraged partnerships and existing resources to deliver evidence-based employment coaching to help participants make the winning shot and score at life.
