On Election Day, voters travel to their assigned polling place to receive and vote a ballot or to drop off a mail ballot. When a voter arrives at the polling place, they are greeted by poll workers who are responsible for providing good customer service and ensuring that voters have a positive voting experience. In San Bernardino County, poll workers are voters who volunteer to work at polling places. These workers receive a nominal stipend in return for this public service. In some cases, poll workers are volunteering for the first time and have little to no experience about polling place operations. In other cases, poll workers are return volunteers with varying levels of experience, and for these repeat workers, the time between service could be as short as a few months or as long as a few years. Consequently, poll workers need to receive training before each election to help them perform their job properly and efficiently. The Elections Office Poll Worker Training Program is an innovative training program that takes a multi-layered approach to teaching adult learners how to effectively manage polling place operations and implement voting procedures. This multifaceted program adapts to the requirements needed for each election and is efficient and engaging for the trainees in each class.
