In 2007, aware that 2008 would be a critical election year with the upcoming primary and national elections, the Oakland county Clerk’s Office created an instructional DVD program for election workers, “Poll Worker Training.” The objective of the program was to supplement the training already provided by local clerks, as well as educate and update poll workers about precinct changes they would find on Election Day. The federal Help America Vote Act had resulted in many such changes, from new electronic voting machines to special equipment for voters with disabilities. Election law had changed as well, with a new Michigan law requiring all voters to show a valid ID before casting their ballot. A copy of a professionally produced, 19-minute video, which “starred” county employees as a cost-saving measure, was provided to and viewed by hundred of election workers in dozens of Oakland county communities, helping to provide up-to-date training, thereby helping to ensure a smoother election process.
