Gaseous Fuel Systems (GFS), a Florida-based engineering development company, converted a CAT 777C tock truck to run on liquid natural gas. The conversion requires liquid natural gas, or LNG, to be used as a replacement for diesel fuel using equipment re-fitted to coal mining vehicles with existing diesel engines. The conversion does not change the engine, but works alongside the diesel engine to mix the two fuels. This was the first time such a system was tested in North America. The system enables operators of diesel vehicles to substantially reduce operating costs by substituting diesel fuel with lower cost, cleaner burning natural gas. The CAT 777C operated at 60 percent gas substitution without a loss of performance.
