Midland County, Texas leaders and organizations have adopted and put into action clean-up efforts to remedy the growing trash problem in the community. As these efforts have been helpful, the issue continues to remain a frustrating matter. It is apparent the growing issue needs more assistance in properly maintaining a cleaner and brighter community. Midland County Commissioners' Court budgeted funds and implemented a specific contribution effort to the ongoing labor while supporting its non-profit organizations. In 2017, Midland County challenged local non-profit organizations to compete in a trash pick-up contest called "Pick-Up Midland County". First, Second, and Third place winners were awarded $15k, $7k, and $3k, respectively. As a result, Pick-Up Midland County provided funds and support to community programs offered by each organization, reported outstanding team building skills within participating organizations, and public awareness of Midland County's assistance in a cleaner community. Since the first challenge in May 2017, local businesses want to partner with Midland County to provide more awareness and increase participation. Discussions are currently underway and look forward to growing the program. Midland County enjoys the opportunity to share their story and help other counties with similar issues.
