Year: 2017

Broward County Workers’ Compensation program is self-administered and self-insured. It protects approximately 12,000 employees and volunteers. Eighty-six percent (86%) of Broward County employees are union represented. Broward County is the second most populous county in Florida, the 18th in the United States, and home to 31 municipalities including Fort Lauderdale. The county’s responsibilities include an extensive transportation system, cruise port and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The Personnel Management through Metrics Program was initiated on December 1, 2012. The purpose of the program was to substantially improve the productivity and quality of service being provided by the ten-member team of Broward County Risk Management employees. This would allow the program to flourish in times of ever increasing budget demands. The results have been phenomenal. Since the implementation of the program, the team has reduced its size by forty percent (40%), saved Broward County over $17,000,000, implemented Best Practices that have yielded a fifteen percentage (15%) point increase in performance and reduced the County’s open claims inventory by seventy-two percent (72%).
