Year: 2009

The Humboldt County Library features the Parenting Corner within the Children’s Room with the objective of making educational information more readily accessible to the parents and caretakers of young children primarily focusing on teaching American Sign Language and Baby Sign. Continuing support for the idea that babies are learning to communicate through signage before learning to speak prompted a need for parents to have more resources and space available to educate themselves. The Parenting Corner gives parents room to explore material just for them while remaining close to their children. Designed to be a friendly, engaging environment, it allows children to be exposed to literature and learning while also allowing parents to be actively engaged as well. In partnering with Humboldt State University, the program has organized workshops to provide education and support for parents as well.
