Opportunity Knocks is a truancy reduction program for teens whose families receive CalWorks, a type of welfare reform program. The goal of Opportunity Works is to end the cycle of intergenerational welfare by increasing school attendance for many of these kids. The program offers employment training, tutoring, counseling, and mentoring for teenagers with truancy issues. Ultimately, the program intends to assist each student in graduating from high school, help with decision-making skills, and reduce the risk for long-term welfare dependence.
