The Online Opioid Education Course for High School Athletes- called “The Game You Can’t Win”- is an interactive, e-learning course designed to educate high school athletes on how to prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription opioid medications. Although high school athletes are at risk for misusing and abusing prescription opioids, there are few resources to address this. “The Game You Can’t Win” online opioid education course was created through a partnership between the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), and the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith, and Family to meet this need. Designed as a 30-minute, interactive, e-learning course in both English and Spanish, “The Game You Can’t Win” online opioid education course will be available for Arizona schools to use for the upcoming school year. In addition, beginning in 2021, the course will be a requirement for high school students engaged with the AIA to participate in high school sports. This requirement is expected to result in approximately 150,000 Arizona students completing the “The Game You Can’t Win” online opioid education Course in the first year with an additional 81,000 students completing it annually.
