The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste management (DSWM) began residential curbside recycling collection service in 1990 with a dual-stream program, where residents separated recyclable items into two containers which they then carried to the curb. Dual-stream recycling was replaced with a modern, single-stream curbside recycling program. The new program is easier for residents, as all recyclable materials go into one wheeled cart, for easy placement at the curb â and the program accepts more types of recyclable material than before. The DSWMâs education campaign showed residents how easy it is to recycle under the new program. Thanks in part to the DSWMâs initial and ongoing curbside recycling education campaign, Miami-Dadeâs recycling tonnages nearly doubled in the first year and have remained at this higher rate ever since.
