Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner (MCOME) created a Medicolegal Death Investigator (MDI) Trainer position in 2015, after identifying gaps in knowledge and communication between the Office and its many stakeholders. These gaps were resulting in incorrect and inconsistent information being shared with the community and partners, as well as ineffective use of resources. The purpose of the MDI Trainer is to address these gaps by providing consistent training and education to both internal MCOME staff and external community members and partners. MCOME has seen increased and more accurate information being shared with customers and stakeholders, a greater understanding of MCOME’s roles and responsibilities in conducting an independent death investigation which has improved the effectiveness of many partnerships, and a better use and allocation of limited resources in the death investigation process.
