OC READ is OC Public Libraries’ adult literacy program that assists adults in Orange County with basic reading and writing skills. As the program expanded its services to meet the needs of families in Orange County, the Families for Literacy component was added. Families for Literacy provides resources, programs and activities for parents and caregivers to support them in their role as their child’s first teacher. Early literacy-building activities are critical and have been linked to school readiness. For children who grow up in a home that promotes literacy, studies have shown that they will have a higher likelihood of attaining educational achievement, demonstrate more prosocial behavior and experience lower rates of unemployment as adults. The OC Read Families for Literacy program has created Book Camps, Charlie Cart workshops and Stay and Play areas at all 32 OC Public Libraries’ locations. These program components offer a supportive environment for a healthy development of the entire family. OC Public Libraries is committed to helping Orange County families with their literacy needs to ensure kindergarten readiness and beyond.
