About the Program

Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2013

The re-opening of a valuable community resource was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the County of San Bernardino, Preschool Services Department (PSD) and the City of San Bernardino. The collaboration enabled the two government agencies to reopen and revitalize the Nicholson Park Family Learning and Community Resource Center in 2011. The center had been closed for two years due to city budget cuts. The collaboration made it possible for PSD and the City of San Bernardino to restore services which had been previously eliminated, and provide many additional services to children and families. After school activities for children include arts and crafts, indoor/outdoor games, tutoring, reading/homework assistance, teen hobby clubs, and cooking with kids. In addition, a computer lab with 10 computers is available for students to complete homework assignments. Classes and resources for adults include: physical fitness/exercise classes, introductory computer classes, English as a Second Language and General Educational Development (GED) test classes, Child Health and Nutrition, Child Development, Parenting, Job-Coaching, Financial Literacy, Adult Literacy and Tutoring. The City of San Bernardino Police Department has also initiated a Neighborhood Watch program which meets at the center.
