The Miami-Dade Solid Waste (MDSW) Department, Mosquito Control (MC) Division is responsible for mosquito inspections and treatment. In 2016, the first recognized outbreak of the mosquito-borne transmission of the Zika virus occurred in Miami-Dade County. The volume of requests increased exponentially leading to increased inspections, spraying, and the use of outside contractors. During the 4 month Zika outbreak, over 12,000 mosquito service request were processed. Prior to the 2016 Mosquito season, an average of 4,000 paper inspection requests were processed annually. The Information Technology Department developed a strategy and implemented a suite of solutions that would cover all operational aspects of the Division. These solutions helped streamline processes, automate paper intensive workflows, and eliminate the use of redundant legacy systems. They introduced Innovative technologies such as real-time field collection, and work assignments. These Cloud-based GIS solutions provide location analysis, data management tools and management dashboards. Since its implementation, Mosquito Control has been able to complete over 18,000 service requests, 30,000 residential inspections, 146,000 storm drain and mosquito trap inspections. They have been able to streamline their data entry by empowering their inspectors thru the use of field technology required to meet higher levels of service.
