Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department’s (WASD) inaugural Model Water Tower Competition (MWTC), which debuted on November 21, 2009, filled a service gap to an underserved demographic: teens. This innovative competition engaged students to grasp classroom science theories and apply them in a real world scenario—the construction of a working model water tower. The MWTC increased and improved communication between the intergovernmental entities of WASD and the area high schools within the Miami-Dade Public School system. Outreach events conducted at participating schools not only assisted the student engineers in preparing for the competition, but also introduced them to future career opportunities in the water profession. The MWTC furthers the WASD’s Public Affairs Section’s mission to educate, inform and promote department initiatives such as conservation and responsible stewardship of our natural resources.
