Year: 2020

The Miami-Dade Public Library System’s (MDPLS) mission is to provide extraordinary services, spaces and experiences that promote literacy and learning, personal growth and limitless opportunities for residents of Miami-Dade County. The Miami VA Healthcare System Community Living Center Outreach serves as a crucial component in achieving this goal by showcasing the library as a responsive, supportive organization that promotes recreational activities that enhance quality of life for our residents. The program is a monthly outreach to the Miami VA Healthcare System’s Community Living Center (Miami VA CLC), a residential home-like environment for veterans that provides skilled nursing care for its patients/residents. This outreach combines the efforts of three separate service units within MDPLS: Mobile Library Services, the Braille and Talking Books and Connections: Services for the Homebound units, and the Community Engagement and Programming department. The purpose is to provide veterans with ongoing access to library materials, including large print, easy-to-read/high-interest materials, and audiobooks with players for those who have difficulty reading due to visual, physical, or reading disabilities. Residents browse a selection of curated materials, request items to be brought on subsequent visits, and sign up for Braille and Talking Books and/or Connections services.
