Miami-Dade Public Library System’s?Beauty 101?Academy?filled?a need for programming that?focuses on young?women?and allows them to learn beauty enhancement techniques and health and wellness strategies in a safe and judgement free environment.?The Beauty 101 Academy allowed?participants to express their individuality while learning and applying?beauty techniques?to?build?self-confidence.?During weekly one-hour sessions, attendees?were?given?practical and affordable ways to care for themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically so that they can be the best versions of themselves.?Major topics covered included?skincare, makeup application, nutrition, fitness, and mental health.?Attendees?were?also encouraged to?utilize?supplemental resources available in the library’s collections, such as books, DVDs, and e-resources.?An added benefit of the?program?was?the?socialization?and?comradery?that evolved?during the series.?Participants took advantage of?being in a?safe space, often discussing concerns with the group, including adolescent pregnancy, peer pressure,?and bullying?topics. This program?was?offered?at the North Dade Regional Library?where?young?women?gathered to?meet new?people, asked?questions they?may?have?felt?uncomfortable asking in other environments, and discovered?new?interests.?
