About the Program

Category: Parks and Recreation (Best in Category)

Year: 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic affected everyone around the world. Countries closed their borders to tourism; cities and counties asked residents to stay home and practice social distancing and businesses closed their doors or had their employees working from home when possible. In addition, parks nationwide closed their facilities, programs and open spaces in an effort to curb the spread and keep employees and patrons safe. The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Department launched #ThePlayground and offered virtual activities for its residents and visitors in order to continue delivering recreational, educational and entertainment options to people of all ages. Videos from across the park system were made available live and through video streaming on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Videos featured exercise programs like Zumba and Yoga, EcoAdventures kayak and canoe tours, behind-the-scenes at attractions and heritage parks including Zoo Miami, The Deering Estate and Fruit & Spice Park. Scheduling of these videos included at least one video released weekly at 3 p.m. EST on Thursdays. In less than a month since launching the campaign on March 26, the videos have earned a total of 7,039 views and counting across Miami-Dade Parks' social media channels.
