The Business Services Unit of the Suffolk County Department of Labor has the responsibility of assisting organizations in meeting their employee recruitment goals. The United States Census Bureau had the challenge of recruiting and hiring thousands of individuals for the 2010 census in Suffolk County. They needed to fill positions, in a relatively short period, which included Census field representatives, enumerators, crew leaders, Census clerks, and recruiting assistants, among others. They approached the Suffolk County Department of Labor to assist in the recruitment and hiring process. The Business Services Unit of the Suffolk County Department of Labor developed a recruitment effort unique to the needs of the United States Census Bureau. They created a series of recruiting events that provided outreach to all Suffolk County residents, not just those individuals who had already been active in the existing Suffolk County Department of Labor’s “One-Stop” system. By utilizing the SCDOL network and partnerships, as well as those of the Suffolk County Library System, they were able to reach residents who normally would not visit the Suffolk County Department of Labor One-Stop offices due to lack of transportation, child care services, or other barriers.
