About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

The Medical-Legal Project is the first-ever truly collaborative effort to create and implement a medical-legal elective training course between Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH), Southwestern Law School, UCLA Gero-psychiatry, and Bet Tzedek Legal Services, private attorney and a retired probate court judge. The Medical-Legal Project designed and implemented a training to provide knowledge and skills set otherwise not available yet needed to serve the older adults in Los Angeles County. It was designed to have general psychiatrists, gero-psychiatry fellows and law students learn to understand, communicate and navigate the medical and legal landscapes. The Medical-Legal Project was so successful that the collaborative parties are discussing, not only the continuation of the project but also the creation and implementation of a one-of-a-kind Medical-Legal education track.
