The McKinney Medical Center (MMC) is an affordable and accessible health care facility located in Camden County, Georgia. Camden County has a significant poor and underserved population, and access to health care is an important component of addressing the community’s health care needs. In 2013, Camden County Administrator Steve Howard and McKinney Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Ola Smith began discussions on how to provide health care services to all individuals in the community who are in need. MMC is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) meeting the primary health care needs of the uninsured, under-insured and underserved of Camden. FQHC’s charge for services on a community board approved, sliding-fee scale that is based on a patient’s family income and size. In return for serving all patients, regardless of ability to pay, FQHC’s receive consideration from the Federal government in the form of a cash grant, cost-based reimbursement for their Medicaid patients, and free malpractice coverage under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA). The organization’s main purpose is to provide preventive healthcare for adults, adolescents, children, and infants. Family medicine is provided to address issues for all members of the family, from adults to pediatrics. Other services provided include dental care, immunizations, women’s health, health checks and sports physicals. The mission of MMC is “to enhance primary care services by working in collaboration with all our communities to provide excellent health care to the uninsured, under-insured, and insured population, including migrant workers and non-U.S. citizens.” MMC is committed to listening to each patient’s concerns and aggressively treating common ailments. The Vision of McKinney Medical Center is to become the preventive health care provider.
