Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) provides connections that improve people’s lives by planning, designing, building, maintaining and operating over 5,200 lane miles of roads extending across the 9,000 square miles of Maricopa County. In order to function as “One MCDOT” and interact effectively and consistently with the public, other County departments and divisions within MCDOT there was a need to spatially view key road data including: • County Owned/MCDOT maintained • County Owned/Primitive road • County Owned/Not MCDOT maintained • County Owned/Maintained by others via Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) • Not County Owned/Maintained by MCDOT as a courtesy • Not County Owned/Maintained by MCDOT via IGA MCDOT partnered with Maricopa County GIS to develop an expandable, web-based platform using Esri ArcGIS powerful mapping software) to display curated data from multiple sources. The resulting application was delivered in less than six months and has been upgraded twice in the last 15 months to add more layers and improve the functionality. The MCDOT team has enthusiastically embraced the Road Information Tool (RIT) and has found it to be an invaluable reference to confirm right-of-way, identify field maintenance locations and to respond to public inquiries. The visibility of the information geographically has also allowed for the identification of discrepancies and ultimately is improving the overall quality of our data.
