Category: Libraries (Best in Category)

Year: 2020

To enhance county-wide efforts in creating a healthier Catawba County, the library collaborated with community partners to introduce LiveWell @ the Library. This initiative was aimed at increasing community health awareness, encouraging better habits and providing free opportunities to explore exercise, nutrition, and wellness opportunities. From a few programs in 2017 to nearly 100 programs in 2018, and over 150 programs offered in 2019, LiveWell @ the Library has been an outstanding success in collaboration and implementation at all levels of the county-library-community dynamic. The library introduced a variety of popular physical activities including Yoga, Tai Chi, and Zumba providing our community with free options when looking to explore an exercise program. Numerous workshops on topics including meditation, substance abuse, nutrition, wellness checks, and healthy cooking encouraged healthy living and wholesome eating habits.Program survey results report that 100 percent of participants feel more knowledgeable about the health topics, intend to apply what they learned to adopt or maintain a healthier lifestyle, and feel more confident about taking care of their or their family's health. One community participant had this to say: “I am so thankful for the Zumba class through the Catawba County Library. After a period of non-activity, the class has allowed me to get moving again & has been wonderful for my physical, emotional & mental well-being. The instructor keeps it fun & challenging and sends out an inspiring message each Monday morning. What a great way to start my week!”
