Year: 2010

Individuals with disabilities often find that their recreation opportunities are limited. The County of San Diego aimed to change that with the new Lindo Lake ADA Fitness Walk. The Department of Parks and Recreation opened admissions-free Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Fitness Walkway with seventeen universal outdoor exercise stations for people of all ages and abilities in Lakeside, California in October of 2009. The ADA walk also offers a cool, tree-shaded, stroller and ADA accessible walkway on a peninsula surrounded by water. The Lindo Lake ADA Fitness Walk serves as a focal point for bringing shared outdoor fitness activities to neighbors of this east San Diego County community. From a leisurely walk to a hare-core workout, this facility is consistently used by park visitors, sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. Families with young children, teenagers, elderly and disabled individuals now have access to fitness equipment that was traditionally available only to individuals who could afford expensive equipment or gymnasium membership. The project promotes health and wellness while at the same time fostering human development, promoting recreational experiences and strengthening community image and sense of place.
