Year: 2015

The Catawba County Library has expanded our community vision by developing a community garden that cultivates plants and people all through gardening. The garden is a collaboration of people and community partners working together to grow healthy local foods, encourage learning, and provide fruits and vegetables to local citizens in need. Our collaboration with the NC Cooperative Extension of Catawba County has begun to host a healthy, knowledgeable, and engaged community with a garden that is connecting children and adults to vegetable gardening, nature and literacy. This expanded service helps our community discover the joys of eating healthy food they have grown. Currently our community garden includes 10 raised beds, multiple vegetable containers and a variety of pots with flowers and herbs. Our community garden is a place where children and adults can continue to grow, harvest and share plants, connect gardening and literacy through children’s and adult programming, as well as learn about organic gardening practices, composting, stewardship, healthy eating and the natural world.
