Capital Improvement related to durability, serviceability and maintenance of 24 multi-level garage structures is the primary activity of the Engineering and Maintenance Section of the Division of Parking Management, Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). The design and construction periods of the garages range from the early 1960âs to present. The newer garages are below grade and are incorporated within mixed-use development complexes. MCDOTâs garage light infrastructure: electrical circuits, fixtures, anchorage, third-party programmable devices are varied, and they reflect over half a century of electrical engineering and light technologies. The garages had a mixture of retrofit lighting infrastructure with a mixture of incandescent fixtures after two previous lighting improvement programs with the last one concluding in the 1990âs. The result was mixed, and a decision was made to wait and allow the technology time to develop. In 2016, the engineering section initiated a capital improvement program, LED Infrastructure: Light and Controls. The objective was to gradually introduce the very best practice of the LED technology with appropriate supporting infrastructure over a three-year period. Emphasis was made on learning and improving from each phase of LED light implementation. The results to date haves been featured in the Countyâs Annual Green Report.
