The Lake Worth West KaBOOM! Playground Project is a public-private partnership where government joined forces with non-profit and community service organizations, neighborhood residents, and more than 200 volunteers to give area kids the childhood they deserve by building a new playground in one day. The playground was designed by the real play experts – local children. This is the first project of its type for Palm Beach County government, and it is the result of the Office of Community Revitalization’s creative partnership with the Office Depot Foundation, the project’s major funding partner, and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all kids get a childhood filled with the balanced and active play needed to thrive. Through this partnership, over 500 at-risk children have been provided with a much-needed opportunity to have fun and exert excess energy in a safe environment and, most importantly, have the joyful childhood they deserve. The project, implemented in 2015, was a resounding success not only because it provided for a safe new place for children to play, but also brought the community together and provided community members with the opportunity to learn new skills and become empowered to bring about positive changes in their community.
