About the Program

Category: Volunteers (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

Keep Lake Beautiful (KLB) was launched as a new program by the Lake County Board of County Commissioners in 2014 and became an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful in 2015. The mission of KLB is To Beautify Lake County by Engaging Our Community. Within its first few months, KLB was able to organize and conduct a countywide community cleanup in which over 6,000 pounds of litter and debris was collected and properly disposed of. In nine months since the program’s inception, nine tons of litter had been collected, at little or no cost to the taxpayer. KLB has had many successful events, ranging from litter and debris removal to school beautification events, all with the support municipal governments and community partners, student groups, local businesses and the KLB Advisory Board Committee. Thus far, 300 KLB volunteers have collected almost 18,000 pounds of litter/debris, removed litter from four miles of roadways, painted six school buildings, restored street games at a local school, and planted over 300 trees and plants. KLB is able to lead the way to a cleaner and more beautiful Lake County by motivating and educating citizens to take responsibility for the environment.
