About the Program

Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2014

The Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program was developed and was implemented in April 2011 by Suffolk County to bring veterans together to listen and benefit from each other’s experience with service-related issues, everything from getting back into civilian life to learning about recovery from PTSD and TBI, returning to school, starting a new career, re-engaging in family life, or connecting to post-service benefits and services. The Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is based in the principles of mutual self-help. By bringing veterans together in a nonclinical setting to share experiences, camaraderie and support, each has the opportunity to speak freely and openly about their military service without judgment.
