Jalama Road is a 14 mile long 2-lane highway that connects US Highway 1 with Santa Barbara Counties’ Jalama Park at the Pacific Ocean. The road experienced stability problems beginning in 1995 at a location 4.8 miles from US Highway 1. A 40-foot wide sinkhole developed at the surface above the collapsed pipe, further destabilizing the roadway. Continued earth settlement caused surface water collection pipes to separate causing even more settlement. One lane of the road was closed to traffic from 2008 until its repair in 2012. The repair program was initiated on January 26, 2012 and completed in February 2013.
