Integrating Public Art and Affordable Housing in Diverse Communities: Caribbean Village â Miami-Dade County Art in Public PlacesIn 2018, the Miami Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, through its award-winning Art in Public Places Program, launched four integrated public art commissions by Miami-Dade County based artists at Caribbean Village, an affordable housing facility for seniors in the under-resourced neighborhood of Richmond Heights, a predominantly African American community with a significant history. Led by the Departmentâs Art in Public Places Program, the Integrating Public Art and Affordable Housing in Diverse Communities: Caribbean Village Project is a partnership with the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Housing and Community Development; the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; and private partner Pinnacle Housing. The goal of the project is to commission public artworks that contribute to the diverse identity of a community and bring high quality visual arts experiences for affordable housing residents, visitors and the neighborhood at-large. Outcomes for the project include:oObserving and honoring the local cultural heritage; oLeveraging the arts to improve residentâs quality of life; oEnhancing the level of citizen participation;oPromoting intergovernmental cooperation;oProviding measurable results of constituent services; and oAchieving excellence and quality design, beyond compliance, for the benefit of the public.
