About the Program

Category: Transportation (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

In response to the inefficient nature of Miami's current transportation and shipping infrastructure, the new Ground Transportation System (GTS) was implemented by the Port of Miami Information Technology Section in close collaboration with a leading radio-frequency identification (RFID) integration firm. The system provides the Operations and Accounting Divisions with cutting-edge trip-capture and processing tools, enforcement capabilities and internet financial payment functionality. The seamless integration between the Ground Transportation System and the Port’s existing legacy systems facilitated the achievement of all project goals and objectives, while at the same time preserving the Port’s Enterprise Vision that guides past, present and future automation efforts at Port Miami. The selection of a best-of-breed solution provider combined with the use of the latest software development tools and Rapid Application Design techniques have allowed for the completion of this Open-Road Ground Transportation solution which may be the first of its kind and scope ever implemented at a seaport in the United States. This system represents the modern way of doing business at Seaports worldwide. Because of its highly innovative design, amply reusable concept, and efficient implementation, it is a successful program that can benefit any county.
