The advent of âGreenâ case management and maintenance solutions that support a paperless work environment led to Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts facing new challenges in effectively managing the volume of electronic document images and the costs associated with their storage. The Image Compression Project was developed to meet these challenges. The in-house developed Image Compression process reduces the amount of storage space required to store millions of images of scanned documents while maintaining the integrity and clarity of each original scanned document. It allows for faster retrieval of the scanned images utilized: in court by the judiciary, at the Courthouse by citizens printing certified copies of court records, internally by operational staff, and via the Internet for registered attorneys conducting case research. The Image Compression project has resulted in an average 70% reduction in the storage space requirements for black and white, grayscale, and color scanned documents, and has achieved a reduction in the retrieval time for multi-page color documents of approximately 50%.
