As a means to ensure the highest level of public safety, to protect the area’s most precious natural resources, and to maximize the quality of service to citizens, Leon County implemented a Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Collection Program in Fiscal Year 2011 to ensure the appropriate disposal of hazardous materials. The original idea of individual events held in targeted neighborhoods, while often well-received, had highly variable attendance that made planning and budgeting of these events difficult. To address this issue while also making the events more predictable and easy to locate, Leon County developed a regular schedule at fixed locations. Since this change, average attendance and the average weight of hazardous material has increased, the ability to plan and schedule staffing has been simplified, and overtime budgeting has stabilized.
