Due to renewed interest in Pike Countyâs most famous residents âThe Hatfields and McCoysâ, Pike County Government recognized an opportunity to further showcase Pike Countyâs many historic sites related to the feud along the Tug Fork River. By cooperating with Artists Collaborative Theatre, Pike County Tourism, the community based Hatfield McCoy Arts Council and others, Pike County began the renovation of the Hatfield McCoy Park at McCarr. Located less than a one mile from the Paw Paw Tree Massacre and Hog Trail Sites, the park underwent a massive renovation, with Pike County Government constructing a new amphitheater and restroom facility after the conceiving the idea of playing host to a play about the feud. BloodSong: a Story of the Hatfield and McCoys was written and produced by Artists Collaborative Theatre and was performed at the park throughout the summer months. In addition, Pike County Government, Pike County Tourism and local historians devised tours to various sites during the run of the outdoor production with visitors taking in the play as a finale to their tour. At the productionâs opening nearly 300 people traveled to Hatfield McCoy Park to watch local Pike County talent perform the story of the Hatfields and McCoys and attendance remained high throughout the summer. In 2014, the park will again play host to the outdoor production with a number of other plays and activities to be planned as well.
