Fraud is pervasive throughout the United States, costing an estimated $80 billion in losses every year. Crooks constantly devise new and clever schemes, using the latest technology to defraud consumers. Because financial scams are grossly underreported and often difficult to investigate and prosecute, the Los Angeles County District Attorneyâs Office initiated a cross-platform consumer education campaign to increase fraud awareness and decrease rates of victimization. The District Attorneyâs Office launched its #FraudFriday initiative in 2015. The goal is to empower and protect Los Angeles County constituents through fraud education, thereby keeping financial predators at bay.
