Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

Through a collaborative partnership established between the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Inmate Services Bureau (ISB) and Lions Clubs International, hearing impaired inmates are provided a unique opportunity to learn specialized skills and serve the community through an eye glass refurbishment program called the Folsom Project. The hope was that as hearing impaired inmates received positive feedback for their hard work, a lasting impression would be made upon them, providing them with a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. Since it's implementation, there has been a reduction in recidivism among female inmates. This program not only provides a better quality of life for inmates but it also benefits the community as a whole, providing tools and resources for inmates who will eventually become members of society again.
