Flagler County, Florida, in October 2019 launched the Flagler County Leadership Academy that is dedicated solely to developing the potential of its top-tier staff to further professionalize the agency and to establish succession planning. It is structured like the programs undertaken by Fortune 500 companies, and is open not only to the staff under the administration of the Board of County Commissioners, but also to the staff of other constitutional officers within the county, as well as the school district and municipalities. The class size is limited to promote and encourage a high level of student engagement. Materials and methodology are in line with graduate level coursework. Sixteen students graduated from the inaugural advanced leadership and organizational development program in 2020, and an additional 18 students will graduate from the class of 2021 in a few short months. Graduates of the program have received promotions within their agencies, and one has been recruited to speak on the topic “Effective Leadership in Times of Change” for an upcoming conference.
