Over the last twelve years, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department has gone through drastic changes to improve the professionalism of the department and the effectiveness of the personnel. Sheriff Leon Lott has laid a course for the department that centers around 100% community oriented policing and a mission that focuses on improved quality of life; by maintaining a high standard of professional accountability. The greatest affect that the high standard of accountability has had is on the health and welfare of their personnel. Through increasing the level of physical activity in their personnel and the commitment of the Sheriff to promote and support healthy decisions, their effectiveness has increased tremendously. Workers compensation claims have declines, use of sick time has reduced, and the amount of officer related injuries has dropped.
