About the Program

Category: Parks and Recreation (Best in Category)

Year: 2018

With a lack of after-school activities offered in the eastern section of Montgomery County, and noting an increase in teens dealing with negativity from social media, Fashion Boot Camp was created to offer a safe, social environment that promoted positive self-awareness. Fashion Boot Camp is a program that has the structure of a boot camp program, including running laps if you are late. However, the main focus is to create a full-scale fashion show at the end of the session. The fashion show is an opportunity for all participants to build self-confidence and self-esteem as they see themselves as truly worthy – either as a valuable teammate working to produce the show, and/or as a model wearing the latest trends and having a professional photographer document their inner and outer beauty. The program takes place Friday evenings in winter when kids are more susceptible to risky behavior. Participation is free. The student’s work in teams for eight weeks and the final product is a red-carpet fashion show complete with stage, lighting, DJ, and models wearing the latest trends. Teachers, parents and other members of the community come out to cheer on “their” model and celebrate all variations of beauty.
