The Miami-Dade County’s Enterprise Technology Services Department (ETSD) Succession Planning Application is a strategy to address the gaps left by the retirement of departmental employees. The goal is to ensure that there are highly qualified people in all positions, not just today but next year and five years from now. The ETSD Succession Planning Application provides the information on their employees’ skills, assignments, and training that enables management to make better, more informed decisions when assigning or transferring employees to critical responsibilities. Taking advantage of information in the County’s personnel records and other systems such as their application portfolio, ETSD employees’ information is captured in a central repository. Information is then categorized and presented in various formats to senior management through the use of business intelligence tools, such as dashboards and drill-down reports from a departmental perspective to a division and down to an individual. With proper planning, the department expects to be able to create a strong bench of leaders for the future to ensure that the knowledge and expertise needed to maintain the operation of their critical systems stays after key employees retire.
