The eReader Open House Program is a training program that was created in response to the growing demand for eAudio and eBook materials. The Program provides hands-on training for both staff and community that allow them to utilize and enjoy new library resources with their reading devices. In 2009, the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that 2% of American adults owned eBook Readers. By the fall of 2010, that number was up to 5%, to 12% by May 2011, and 29% in January 2012. An OC Public Librariesâ survey of library patron and staff, conducted in November 2010, strongly indicated that OC residents are eager to acquire new skills in order to embrace and utilize the multiple new technologies available today. Since February 2011, OC Public Libraries has received 2,441 queries regarding the availability of eBooks and eReader training in the branch libraries. Responding to the demand for more eAudio and eBook materials, OC Public Libraries provides patrons with a growing collection of eAudiobooks and eBooks that can be downloaded onto their personal digital devices and began planning and implementing the eReader Open House Program, a hands-on training for both staff and community.
