El Arte is a culturally appropriate event that meets a critical community need for the Spanish-speaking caregivers in the San Diego region. El Arte workshops are supported by the county’s Aging and Independence Services and the Caregiver Coalition, and are designed specifically to overcome obstacles often present in the Hispanic caregiving community. El Arte has been replicated from successful “Art of Caregiving” workshops, and brings together a reliable partnership of bilingual and bicultural personnel from key agencies. The goal of the seminars is to provide practical instruction and resource information targeted directly to Spanish caregivers. Workshops include topics such as bad care and transfers, self-care, emotional healing, physical activity and legal and financial guidance. Seminars are held on weekends to accommodate working caregivers and respite services are offered to enable caregivers the opportunity to attend. The Latino community has long been known for its close-knit family orientation, where family caregivers are the norm. El Arte fills this distinct community need in a culturally sensitive fashion. Through 2009, 175 individuals have participated in these workshops in addition to the participation for 40 agencies.
