About the Program

Category: Information Technology (Best in Category)

Year: 2009

The Oakland County Health Division, in collaboration with the Oakland County Department of Information Technology, has designed and developed a system using the latest Web, GIS, and Wireless Tablet technology to automate the process of inspecting and licensing food service establishments and the investigation and enforcement of public health nuisance complaints in the county. The Food and Complaint Module is part of the E-Health System, which also includes electronic capture and processing of applications for wells and septic systems from Oakland County residents and contractors. Food service establishment owners and operators can submit food service applications and fees over the internet. Applicants can also access the status of their application online. The E-Health System was designed, developed, and implemented as an integrated web-based system that utilizes current technology including GPS Integration and Wireless Tablet Devices. Environmental Health Staff can now complete multiple types of inspections and complaint investigations in the field using wireless tablets. The data is captured, stored, and processed using an integrated workflow process. This system improves efficiency and accuracy in completing inspections and investigations, eliminates the need for hard copy record retention, and ensures compliance with the minimum program requirements and contractual obligations with the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
